It's pretty neat. I saw a demo of Surface at CES last year where they were letting people drag stuff around on a computer "desktop" with their fingers. It's okay I suppose, but one of the charms of table-top gaming, in my opinion, is that it is not electronic. It gets us away from the computer and focused more on our fellow players. I like the paper maps. There is a certain special 'something' to them that sets table-top gaming apart from video games. Kind of like the difference between reading a paper book and reading the same text on a computer screen. Know what I mean?
I'm with John on this one. I love my dice. I love sitting around an empty space (be it table or floor) with friends and crafting that space into an awesome story. While I dislike having reams of paper, I do like to have a physical character sheet with me.
While this is very cool, I think it would be of limited use, especially for those who enjoy games that don't need a grid. I'd never buy one.
That being said, I wouldn't turn down the opportunity to play a game on Surface, were it presented to me. ;)
When they can project a life-realistic 3D hologram around my playing space so I can program the scene and bring it to the table in all it's awesome glory; call me. I am in.
Until then, this is a snazzy!! You can use a layout for a scene for lots of games that don't use grids. The visual can be very helpful. Also, just dropping pictures of NPCs, layouts of buildings and schematics (makes for a neat spy game enhancement), and even "player handouts" with notes or clues. The Possibilities...
I've been itching to get back to the gaming table... I LOVED Living Greyhawk and when that ended I tried a couple of "home games" here in Vegas for a few months... then I deployed. I'm back and am jonesing for more games!
Has anything come of this…
