Board Games Club @ school
I am looking forward to tomorrow's Board Games Club at school. Several weeks ago I was frustrated with how some of "my" kids were doing playing the "strategy games", because they didn't seem to be getting them down. So two Thursdays ago when 5 students came to my room I explained that if they wanted to play checkers or another simple game, that was fine, but not with me, and that they need to start learning the mechanics of a game if they are going to get to a more enjoyable level of play. We then had two separate games going on using the Starter sets (Ruby, Vindicator Hodoon, Lotherin, Gorebelly) and the Action Cards. They seemed to have it down, so we ended with an enjoyable 3-way battle that expanded to include a Voidwalker and Troll Shaman. Last week I did not bring in any games unfortunately and I also had to help a student with academics, but did play some Uno.

Friend's Visit
Today I got together with my good friend David Derr from junior high. He is visiting from the USS Alabama. It's been 6 years since I'd seen him last and he reminded me of our game of Starfarers of Cataan and some HeroClix when he was here last. He said that inspired him to get Starfarers. I remember a very frustrating game of HeroClix against him. He had Batman or Robin up in some hindering terrain and kept sniping me. Out-turtled! He and I are both very defensive players.

When talking about what game we would play he asked about playing some Greyhawk Wars. We briefly talked of Iuz and the Scarlet Brotherhood and the like, but I don't know where the game is exactly. We might play it tomorrow night. Instead we settled on some MAGIC: TG and once more some Thrull Champions, Breeding Pits, Bog Imps, and Serra Angels were summoned forth to do battle. I haven't played since playing Scott a couple of games at Larry's possibly a couple of years ago. We used the same decks. Instant fun.

I need to go to bed. I enjoyed hearing David's stories of getting PK'd in Ultimate Online.

You may be able to approach from the greek mythology perspective and use Mazes and Minotaurs. Do they still teach that to grade school kids?

Well, precisely because of your last thoughts, I have not really considered it at all. Their attention span is also quite flighty, even though I was a 6th grader myself the first time I played D&D. ... I just realized that this is you, Scott, haha. Harry's daughters have 5x the attention span as these 6th graders

Have you thought about running a simple RPG with your kids? I want to teach someday and part of that reason is to do exactly what you are doing. Introduce kids to some games that are not hard to play but require a great deal of thought and planning. I also want to introduce RPGs. I will not be teaching for several years, but the thought is always in my head. There are several FREE and very good rulesets available online that are good for young players. Check out:

Of course since RPGs are SATANIC and lead to following the occult and eventually suicide; you may want to consult parents or administrators. ; )

I don't know how many are planning on playing Savage Worlds, but I made up 5 pregens. If more want to play, character creation only takes 15 minutes or so, so we can draw up some additional characters.
