I tried to be prepared (and earlier) to Vern's this week for Dark Heresy. I got some advice on my Baneblade, assembled some Marauder Horsemen's horses, and painted the thorns on a Dryad unit, the Thistlekin. Every 15 minutes or so Corey would ask "So, when are you going to play?" So maybe next session I will bring my Grey Knights to play afterwards. I want to get a couple more games in before June 13 at Little Shop for the Lucky 13s game.
During the last week I worked on my Dark Age Xtreme objective markers for my Forsaken (I'll probably use them for other things too). I need to apply some transfers or use a stencil to paint some markings on the two grey ones. I also have been painting some Genestealers and reading a lot of White Dwarfs. This is par for the course: I work on something unrelated to what I actually need to get finished, such as Daemonhunters or my WHFB Chaos army.
The Mining Complex
The Mining Complex was inspired by all the Uruk-hai work going on in Orthanc, and quite specifically GW's Gamesday table where the Treants are attacking and there is all this wooden rigging down the side. I am also influenced by all of the quarries in World of Warcraft with the Dwarven one in the Crossroads coming to mind, as well as some others. I started it, I think, in 2003. I borrowed some Dragyri miniatures from Harry, as well as some 54mm Inquisitor ones from Chris Hori. I really had Dark Age and WarMachine in mind when I made it, but wanted it usable for Warhammer Skirmish, 40k, Inquisitor, and whatever other games came along.
One of the sides. There are three carved-out inserts for pictures/murals depicting whatever culture is inhabiting it.
Messy progress. I used particle board to weight down the parts of it while the Liquid Nails dried.
One of the main reasons I stopped: I hated how this idea turned out for this quarter of the board. The raised rock platform looked too fake. I never attached it permanently. I think I will have a wooden platform in its place for fantasy-games and for sci-fi perhaps some IMEX platformer.
So yesterday I brought in half of my Mining Complex from the garage. I haven't done much on it in the last few years. I want to finish it this summer and possibly within the next month or so. Looking at my pictures, when I still was at my Rock Springs apartment I hadn't added my favorite area yet, the top room in this picture, with the Genestealers going up into it, pictured here:

Here's what I'm going to work on today before and after my father-in-law's BBQ
1. Fixing the holes in the Mining Complex. I bought spackling and sealant and some For Sale signs to fill in these gaps. They are caused by the sides dinging into things (probably 40%) and then our cat rubbing on the corners (60%). Here is what I'm talking about:

2. Making 2-3 MDF bases for tree stands. Making 1 MDF difficult terrain/rocky/bouldery area using foam, the spackling, and sealant. I'm going to incorporate drybrushed sand into half of them, so they can match more than my flocked terrain. Yesterday I discovered the dremel section at Wal-Mart and picked up a collet. I'd lost my last one and not used my dremel in a couple of years.
3. A couple of washer-based rocks or shrubs to also hang out on the MDF bases.
4. Prime Marauder steeds white. I'm going to try to use Army Painter stain on them. I also need to prime some Starship Troopers black. I want to finish that stuff this summer too. Again, I may never play SST haha, but I want to work on finishing this.
